For the last few weeks we have been doing our trips on the Muskegon River. The Muskegon has been very high, running 5800 – 6000 cfs. The water temp has been around 38 degrees. The steelhead fishing has been consistent. We have been catching both chrome and dark fish. Some steelhead have been spawning, but it seems like the majority have been hanging out in the holding water waiting for water temps to rise before they get on the gravel to do their business. We have had our best luck bobber fishing with beads but have had our days where back-bouncing eggs has been more productive. There are a lot of walleye in the upper river right now spawning. We have been catching some brown trout holding below and around the spawning walleye as they take advantage of the egg buffet. Steelhead fishing should stay good through the month and into May.
