King Salmon Guide

The King Salmon is a highly prized fish because of its large size and the challenge they are to do battle with. Kings live out in the Great Lakes for approximately 4 years before returning to the river to spawn. In the period of  time they live out in the Great Lakes, King Salmon really pack on the pounds due to the fact they are non-stop eating machines. Adult King Salmon from the Great Lakes average between 15 and 20 pounds, but fish over 30 pounds are a real possibility. When hooked, Kings provide the angler with the ultimate challenge. Long powerful runs along with relentless speed and strength make for a very exciting battle.

We usually run our King Salmon guide trips during the month of September through about mid-October. Some years, depending on the weather, we will start fishing for them as early as mid-August. When this happens, these early run fish are a blast to tie into being they are chrome and full of “bad attitude”. Our King Salmon charters are probably the most popular guide trip we offer.

A highly effective method to fish for river Kings is casting crankbaits near logjams and into holes. When a large King Salmon inhales your crankbait, you better be holding on to your rod tight! Float-fishing with cured eggs is also a method we utilize. Watching your float slowly drift downstream, and to see it disappear and the water explode after the hookset is quite the heart-pounding experience. At times, when Kings first enter the river, we will jig spoons for them in the deeper water of harbors and river mouths. Again, what an experience it is to feel those powerful headshakes after a King pounces on your jig. We use quality rods, reels and tackle to aid in giving you the upper hand on these giant fish. Our guide trips for King Salmon are primarily on the Pere Marquette and Muskegon rivers. I can be reached at (616) 813-5989 if your interested in a guided trip.
