The Atlantic Salmon, or “great leaper,” is one of the most sought after fish on the planet. People travel the world and spend big money in search of this fish. Thanks to the Aquatic Research Lab at Lake Superior State University, we now have a world class fishery for Atlantics right here in Michigan. The Atlantic Salmon is known for its acrobatic jumps and strength. Once an angler ties into an Atlantic, it is a sure bet that they will be hooked for life. We target these fish on the Upper Peninsula’s St. Mary’s River in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Depending on conditions, we will start fishing for them as early as mid-June and continue into mid-August. The Atlantics found in the St. Mary’s River average 2 to 8 pounds but larger fish are definitely available. A popular method to fish for Atlantics is to drift or float-fish flies in the outflow of the Sault Edison hydro plant. Bait fish imitations can also be extremely effective, drifting, swinging or casting. In the crystal clear water of the St. Mary’s, the Atlantic can be seen traveling great distances to chase down your offering. Give us a call today at (616) 813-5989.
