The smallmouth bass fishing on the Grand and Muskegon river has been pretty good. In addition to good numbers, we have been seeing some good sized fish. We have been taking some fish on topwater presentations,  but our most consistent bite has been on sub-surface presentations. The river panfishing has been good as well. We have been finding them congregated around thick cover in the low flows we are currently experiencing. There are a few kings showing up in the northern rivers. Some cooler weather and  rain would sure be nice when it comes to those.

July has been a warm dry month. River levels are low and water temps are high. The smallmouth bass dont seem to be bothered by the heat. We have been doing our fishing trips on the Grand and Muskegon river. Both are fishing good. We are catching alot of fish in the 12 to 16 inch range and they put up a great fight in the river current!  We are also boating a few fish in the 18 to 21 inch range. Once they get near the 20 inch range they sure are a good fish. We have been getting a few fish on topwaters but most are being taken on sub-surface presentations.

Smallmouth fishing on our West Michigan rivers is still going strong. The season started out with a bang and the trend continues. Its been a warm summer so far, and our river temps show that. I was on the Grand River a few days ago and it was 82 deg surface temp. The Muskegon is about 10 deg cooler. The fish are liking the deeper runs and holes and are also relating to drop-offs. A variety of techniques are producing fish and can change from day to day. We are also catching some northern pike, largemouth bass and a few walleye on our charters when targeting smallmouth. Fishing should remain good into fall for smallmouth bass.
